Videos shared online show an American Airlines plane catch fire on the tarmac at Denver International Airport after making an emergency landing Thursday (March 13) evening.
The footage showed flames coming from the plane and passengers chaotically running away from the scene. Many passengers were forced to evacuate by climbing out onto a wing and down emergency slides, with 12 reported to have received treatment for minor injuries at a hospital, CBS News reports.
The fire reportedly took place just before 6:00 p.m. local time after a Boeing 737-800 diverted to the airport after experiencing an engine issue. American Airlines Flight 1006, which departed from Colorado Springs Airport, was en route to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when the "crew reported engine vibrations," at which point it was diverted.
"After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to CBS News.
American Airlines issued a separate statement claiming the plane experienced an "engine-related issue" after landing, at which point it taxied to the gate. The airline claimed that all 172 passengers and six crew members exited the aircraft and were "being relocated to the terminal," which parked at gate C38 at Concourse C, according to CBS News.
